Off-the-shelf Physical-AI deals pass through layers of brokers. The same hour can be re-encoded, trimmed, or split and sold again. File hashes call it new. Overlap does not.
You index the corpus you already own. The counterparty sends a small .olm — perceptual fingerprints, not pixels. The report says how much of the offered lot already sits in your index, which segments match, and whether the copy was slowed or split.
How a report reads
How much of the offered lot already exists in your index.
Which stretches of which files line up — not a binary yes/no.
Slowdown, speedup, and fragments of a longer master.
What it catches
MD5 fails the moment the bytes change. Overlap matches content across time — the window that overlaps, even when the file does not.
| Case | What a broker does | Result | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Re-encode | Same footage, new codec or bitrate. MD5 is different. | Caught | Perceptual hashes survive re-encode. File hash does not. |
| Trim | A 10-minute master sold as a 7-minute clip. | Caught | Temporal matching finds the overlapping window, not just the whole file. |
| Split / batch | One 10-minute tape cut into five 2-minute invoices. | Caught | Each fragment still matches the master on the overlapping segments. |
| FPS / frame drop | 60 fps master resampled to 30 fps, or frames dropped to look new. | Caught | Hash sequence still lines up; the matcher reports the speed ratio. |
| Horizontal flip | Mirrored copy to dodge a naive hash. | Caught | Flip-aware comparison is in the matcher. |
| Mild edge crop | A few percent off the sides — hands still in frame. | Usually caught | A crop ladder covers modest edge trims. Ego sellers will not wreck hands with wild zooms. |
| Heavy crop / zoom | Aggressive crop that changes the framed content. | Harder | Perceptual identity breaks when most of the frame is gone. We do not claim this. |
| Very short clips | A few seconds of footage with little temporal structure. | Harder | The matcher needs a sequence. Short clips are a weaker signal — we say so. |
Honest limits
Ego sellers keep hands in frame. A few percent off the edges is the realistic dodge — and that is the crop Overlap is built for. Aggressive zoom that throws away most of the frame, or clips only a few seconds long, are a weaker signal. We would rather say so than sell a guarantee we cannot keep.
Raw video never has to move. The exchange is a fingerprint manifest. That is also why a lab can screen a lot before an NDA — the pixels stay where they are.
